A DIY Ikea Kitchen in Rockridge proves high end kitchen remodels can be done on a budget

So the story goes, the couple bought a house in Rockridge. The time came to replace the tired old kitchen with their dream remodel. Here’s the story of just one of the wonderful homes we got to tour on the 2026 Rockridge Kitchen Tour:

As the story also tends to go in Rockridge, estimates came in high. Rockridge is a hotbed of remodeling jobs for contractors. More demand than supply. Plus there’s the permitting process and increase in materials and labor costs…something that does not appear to be decreasing.

Ikea to the rescue! After looking at options for labor and cabinetry, Ikea’s Euro-look cabinets offered the high end look and durability the homeowners needed.

As luck would have it, we have an Ikea store nearby in Emeryville. And Ikea has a fun online kitchen planner along with human help to make sure your plan really works. (I’ve used it. It really is fun and their staff is helpful!) We also have plenty “Taskers” from TaskRabbit and other folks who can assemble Ikea cabinets.

The kitchen came together in a typical East Bay way. Meaning, with smart vendor management, resourceful solutions, and hands on sweat equity.

The couple put together a project plan. Then they connected with a local general contractor to help in specialty areas, especially with plumbing, electrical and windows — three areas no homeowner should handle on their own.

The real cost savings came in the assembly. Theey assembled the Ikea cabinetry themselves…while watching TV. One night, one drawer, One weekend, a few cabinets. Luckily they were not in a hurry. With a professionally-installed countertop, you would never know this was a DIY Ikea kitchen.

Complementary wall cabinets in the “liquor cabinet” / bar area pair with a long Husky tool storage cabinet topped with a butcher block. They filled this metal cabinet, you normally see in a workshop, with what else: cocktail tools.

Lastly, this artistic couple sourced upcycled street signs as an oven backsplash as well as for backs on their patio furniture. Fun meets functional!
