No, the banaganoush I'll be making with eggplants No, the banaganoush I'll be making with eggplants from the @monterey.market - smoked on my stovetop - have nothing to do with the tour. But they reminded me what a great life skill it is for kids to feel comfortable playing with fire. Growing up, we roasted corn over flames, eggplants, and many other foods. Smoky heaven! Today at one of the houses on the kitchen tour, I will have Dorie Greenspan's One Chip cookies made with a very special TCHO "choco blanco" large chip. Excited to share! Finally made it to @tophatterskitchen in San Leand Finally made it to @tophatterskitchen in San Leandro and now I see what all the hubbub is about! For example sublime mushroom pate with hemp seed oil with the most delicious array of pickled vegetables - and watermelon rind - and crackers. The 3 meat dish with lettuce and vermicelli noodles is a must. And we wandered to Koolfi ice cream nearby for dessert. San Leandro always has a surprise around the corner and so many cool vintage buildings stuck in time, in a good way. It's a really cool and friendly place to visit and live!

Rockridge home owners tend to invest in high-end kitchen remodels which reflect the average home prices of over $1.5 million here in our neighborhood. But after checking prices with local contractors for a "traditional" kitchen remodel, this couple decided to assemble an Ikea kitchen on their own with some help from a contractor for gutting, plumbers and an electrician, and a company that fabricated the countertop after they had assembled the Ikea cabinets (while watching TV). The creative use of upcycled street signs for back splashes was a big hit among everyone who passed through on the Rockridge Kitchen Tour. As a fan of stick figure iconography, I loved them! The biggest investment for the kitchen remodel was the "servery" folding window that opens up to the patio. It opens on a rail instead of some folding windows that have a large lip at the bottom. So the maximum amount of space and light is exposed. They said the window was an $8,000 investment (and worth every penny...remember pennies?)
