    BySusie Wyshak January 20, 2025December 7, 2025

Thinking about making the move from LA to the Bay Area?   If you’re bemoaning the idea of not being in Los Angeles, by the beaches, in WEHO, or some other scene you might miss, here are a few things to consider about what you’ll love—and what you might miss—about the Bay Area. Is the…

Lists of the best places to live in the United States hit my inbox daily. Best places for coffee lovers, doughnut lovers, chocolate lovers, families…the themes have no end. Most of these lists are “cute” and fun. Yet most of the lists do not take into account the many things that make a place home and liveable….

King Ranch Farms and all the other vendors here at King Ranch Farms and all the other vendors here at the market today are bursting with specialty fall produce - ready for a mixed roast with new harvest California OVOO.

Gotta say I was proud that I knew those were cipollini onions that I am very sure I spelled incorrectly! The honey nut squash look perfect with brown sugar and pecans. 🍁
It's hard to choose which of the many full festivi It's hard to choose which of the many full festivities are going on this Sunday, starting with the Gilmore Girls event in Danville.

Most communities around the East Bay are hosting Fall / Halloween events today.

Here are a few that caught my eye...what's caught yours?

The @oaklandmuseumca annual Day of the Dead festival is like a trip to Mexico. Dancing, crafts, altar building, food, and exhibits are just a few of the soulful event's activities to help us honor our loved ones.

@rockridgeoakland rolls out the orange carpet for its annual Halloween parade, which is always a riot of costumes and characters roving the streets and gathering candy from the local merchants. It's a perfect day for a parade!

@reapclimatecenter is a very cool place to learn about the environment, and today get interactive with bees and honey!

The @ucbgarden invites "kids of all ages"'on this Animal Day. It's the perfect excuse to wear your favorite animal costume and get close to snakes and other critters (as well as rove the beautiful gardens, like a trip around the world).

These employees at the new @lakemerrittgroceryoutl These employees at the new @lakemerrittgroceryoutlet had no idea they would be wiping rain off of carts on the grand opening day! Spirits are high, and I am coming back after excitement has subsided. This store is going to do so well here.

I spoke with several customers who are living on Social Security, who were excited having access to more food in the neighborhood.

The new @lakemerrittgroceryoutlet is opening today The new @lakemerrittgroceryoutlet is opening today on E. 18th St. in #Oakland

There is a line about two blocks long of people waiting to get in partly because they are having giveaways, I think, for the first 50 people or so.

What is most interesting to me is I thought they replaced the Lucky supermarket.:.but no, Lucky is there with has a giant parking lot across the street from #groceryoutlet.

They have someone outside telling people not to park in their lot.

What a missed opportunity that they instead could've been handing out coupons for Lucky and have people discover what the lucky store has that may be grocery outlet does not. It is like an old-fashioned grocery war scene. That being said, I think I will wait until the excitement has died down to visit grocery outlet.

Or as a diehard, #supermarketindustry follower, maybe I will wait in line with my umbrella!

See you at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market! If you have never been here, know that it is a company based in Emeryville and they get lots of food at bargain prices either due to close use-by dates or changes in packaging or bulk deals that they have negotiated.

It is a true food adventure...after the @specialtyfoodassociation show in January they tend to get some great "leftovers" from the show. Lots of organic and natural food!

On another note, DM if you're guilty-pleasure going to Danville for the #GilmoreGirls event.

Rockridge Trader Joe's store - on College Ave half a block from Rockridge BART
Rockridge home owners tend to invest in high-end kitchen remodels which reflect the average home prices of over $1.5 million here in our neighborhood.

But after checking prices with local contractors for a "traditional" kitchen remodel, this couple decided to assemble an Ikea kitchen on their own with some help from a contractor for gutting, plumbers and an electrician, and a company that fabricated the countertop after they had assembled the Ikea cabinets (while watching TV).

The creative use of upcycled street signs for back splashes was a big hit among everyone who passed through on the Rockridge Kitchen Tour.

As a fan of stick figure iconography, I loved them!

The biggest investment for the kitchen remodel was the "servery" folding window that opens up to the patio. It opens on a rail instead of some folding windows that have a large lip at the bottom. So the maximum amount of space and light is exposed. They said the window was an $8,000 investment (and worth every penny...remember pennies?)

Got questions about real estate, kitchen remodeling to sell, investing outside of California or home ownership? Just ask.
