Back when we were in college, we used to come to N Back when we were in college, we used to come to Nabalom, especially for the cheese fruit danishes. Today is the last day to enjoy one as the bakery is closing for good, or for bad. If you're waiting in line, be sure to meet new people. I met an accountant who is also an expert in trust and real estate. But I have to go now because my old landlord is walking down the street! (He grew up in the neighborhood and rattled off all of the old-time businesses that used to be here on College Avenue in the Elmwood District. It was like every small town used to be, including Beverly Hills. A candy shop, a soda shop, a five and dime shop, hardware store, toy store, pet store - many which are still here and are awesome. While developers endeavor to create small town environments in new developments, the Elmwood should be made a historic monument, the embodiment of a thriving, small town. There are so many locations nearby that would be perfect for residential development. I am all for housing, but I am even more for keeping the very few thriving commercial neighborhoods that bring tourism and make a place worth living and staying and meeting neighbors. #saveberkeleyshops

Rockridge home owners tend to invest in high-end kitchen remodels which reflect the average home prices of over $1.5 million here in our neighborhood. But after checking prices with local contractors for a "traditional" kitchen remodel, this couple decided to assemble an Ikea kitchen on their own with some help from a contractor for gutting, plumbers and an electrician, and a company that fabricated the countertop after they had assembled the Ikea cabinets (while watching TV). The creative use of upcycled street signs for back splashes was a big hit among everyone who passed through on the Rockridge Kitchen Tour. As a fan of stick figure iconography, I loved them! The biggest investment for the kitchen remodel was the "servery" folding window that opens up to the patio. It opens on a rail instead of some folding windows that have a large lip at the bottom. So the maximum amount of space and light is exposed. They said the window was an $8,000 investment (and worth every penny...remember pennies?)
