After all my hard work choosing a Netbook, out of the many hitting the market, I’ve decided to chronicle how I selected it and set it up so a newbie could get started right away.
I ended up buying a Acer AOD250-1633 10.1-Inch Black Netbook with Windows 7 Starter from Amazon.
I chose a netbook over a laptop - even though the larger screen of a laptop would be desirable - mainly because of the irresistable low price. Amazon has this amazing deal where you can get 5% back when you buy certain stuff and set up a “pass phrase” by Dec 31.
Netbook Criteria:
This is for a basic Internet and computer user who still uses a wired DSL connection. He mostly surfs the internet, looks at photo albums, and sends / reads email.
- Great reviews especially for ease and reliability
- Largest screen for the price
- Nice to have - a built in webcam (which this Acer has)
- Windows 7 (I had tried a Netbook with Windows XP and it was slow, and of course it is nearly obsolete.)
- An Ethernet port. It seems a lot of Netbooks and of course the MacBook Air don’t have Ethernet ports for a DSL cable. Those come in handy if for some reason a wireless connection isn’t available.
I’d seen some reviews about looking at which processor the netbooks had but as he is a truly basic user, I assumed they were all fast enough.
My next post will chronicle my experience setting it up and configuring it. Can’t wait for my first look at Windows 7!
